Journey of Projection

2026 밀라노 디자인 위크에서 기아는 ‘Resonance of Opposites’를 주제로, 디자이너의 내면을 성찰하는 ‘Journey of Reflection’과 이를 미래 모빌리티로 확장한 ‘Journey of Projection’을 선보였다.

Journey of Projection
A Journey Through Shifting Senses

When we move, more than our physical position changes. The way we perceive light, space, air, and atmosphere shifts, and these changes, in turn, transform our thoughts and emotions. Kia’s “Movement that Inspires” is not simply about how far we travel, but about how shifting sensations encountered through movement can spark new inspiration. For Kia, movement is not merely physical displacement, but a continuous transition between different sensory states.

At Milan Design Week 2026, Kia presented “Resonance of Opposites” through two interconnected exhibitions: “Journey of Reflection,” an introspective exploration of the designer’s inner world, and “Journey of Projection,” which expanded that reflection into the possibilities of future mobility. Nonspace developed the spatial strategy and exhibition planning for “Journey of Projection,” interpreting the movement embodied by each EV concept as a distinct sensory state.

Rather than presenting the vehicles as isolated objects, the exhibition was conceived as a continuous journey in which light, atmosphere, and perception gradually shifted as visitors moved through the space. EV2 was expressed through the light of dawn, signalling a new beginning; EV3 through the sense of exploration found in a forest; and EV4 through textures and materiality inspired by the earth. EV5 evoked a landscape where city and nature converge, while EV9 conveyed the calm of gently moving water. In this way, the meaning of movement proposed by each vehicle was expanded into a series of distinct sensory scenes.

Fabric was selected as the principal medium through which these sensory transitions could be expressed. The exhibition took place in Fabric Hall, a venue shaped by nearly a century of textile heritage. Yet beyond its connection to the site, fabric also resonated closely with Kia’s philosophy of movement. Without a fixed form, it continuously changes in response to light, density, surface texture, and layered depth, creating subtle shifts in spatial character and atmosphere.

Extending throughout the space, the fabric guided visitors’ movement, softened the boundaries between individual zones, and formed a continuous flow across the exhibition. Light and imagery inspired by dawn, forest, earth, city, and water expanded the sensory landscape associated with each vehicle. Together, fabric, light, and moving imagery connected the individual scenes and transformed the sensory shifts of movement into one continuous spatial experience.

As visitors passed through layers of fabric, they moved from one sensory state into another, encountering Kia’s vision for future mobility through the progression of the exhibition. This journey extended beyond visual and spatial perception into taste. The desserts and beverages proposed for the exhibition were designed so that aroma, temperature, texture, and flavour would gradually unfold over time, translating the experience of changing sensations through movement into food and drink.

At the heart of “Journey of Projection” was not simply the presentation of automobiles, but the way in which the future they propose could be experienced. Kia’s idea of movement was translated through space, fabric, light, imagery, taste, and aroma, creating a journey in which perception and thought shifted with the movement of each visitor. Here, movement extends beyond physical relocation to become an experience that moves both the senses and the mind.
